Development of the Danja Fistula Center

Detailed discussions were held with SIM in 2007-2008 to create the partnership that would develop and operate the Danja Fistula Center. An architectural and design team from eMI (Engineering Ministries International) carried out a detailed site-survey in Danja in 2008 and modified hospital plans previously developed by WFF to accommodate the geography of the Danja location. Groundbreaking for the Center took place in May, 2008, and the foundations were put into the ground later that year.

In late 2008, a team from WFF visited the hospital at CSL Danja to carry out extensive renovations of the existing operating theater, modifying it to accommodate the needs of fistula surgery. New equipment was installed and medical and surgical supplies were stockpiled. In 2009, the first fistula operations were carried out by a visiting team of international doctors and nurses from the United States, Germany, and Holland.

Periodic mission trips by visiting surgical teams will continue throughout 2010 using the renovated CSL operating theater until construction of the new specialist fistula center is completed.

The new specialist fistula facility is scheduled to open in early 2011. When completed, the Danja Fistula Surgery and Training Center will include:

» An outpatient clinic
» A 42-bed fistula ward
» A surgical suite capable of accommodating three simultaneous operations
» Kitchen and laundry facilities
» A hostel for patients requiring long-term care
» Offices for administration, research, and fistula prevention and outreach projects.
