Dr. Itengre Ouedraogo, founder of ARENA Medical Center in Burkina Faso and a longtime partner of the Worldwide Fistula Fund (WFF), recently completed a multi-city tour across the United States. His visit was a powerful testament to global collaboration, maternal health advocacy, and the enduring relationships that support women affected by childbirth injuries.
New York City — Diplomacy and Dialogue
Dr. Itengre’s journey began in New York City, where he visited the Burkina Faso Consulate in Harlem. Dr. Itengre was joined by WFF Board members Joyce McIntyre, and Christina Lee. This stop underscored the importance of advocacy to make meaningful change. We were thrilled to help facilitate this new connection for both increased international cooperation and recognition of his work in maternal health.
Later, he participated in a distinguished panel discussion hosted by Gregory Fleming, CEO of Rockefeller Capital Management. The panel featured Dr. Lewis Wall, WFF’s founder, and Dr. Rahel Nardos, a former board member. Together, they explored the intersection of philanthropy, global health, and the future of fistula care. The event brought together thought leaders, supporters and friends for a compelling conversation on sustainable impact.
While in New York, several members of our Board were able to meet Dr. Itengre for the first time, break bread together, and take time to sightsee, deepening the personal connections that have sustained his work over the years.
Seattle — Conversations and Community Support
Seattle welcomed Dr. Itengre with two impactful events, with support from several of our local board members.
The Rainier Club — Global Policy Committee
Hosted by the Rainier Club’s Global Policy Committee, this intimate gathering allowed Dr. Itengre to share insights into ARENA’s work and the broader challenges of quality maternal healthcare in West Africa. Attendees engaged in thoughtful dialogue about global health equity and the role of local action in international change.
Voices of Healing: WFF Fundraiser
The following evening, WFF hosted Voices of Healing: An Evening with WFF at FareStart in downtown Seattle. Dr. Itengre was the featured speaker, sharing stories of resilience and healing. The event included an auction featuring beautiful, handcrafted items made by women served at ARENA.
Thanks to our supporters and generous sponsorship from SkinnyDipped for making this evening a success!
Foster City — Faithful Support
In Foster City, California, Dr. Itengre visited members of the congregation at Central Peninsula Church, which has supported him since his time at Danja Fistula Center. The visit was a heartfelt reunion with a community that has walked alongside him for decades. He shared updates on ARENA’s progress and expressed gratitude for their enduring faith and generosity. He connected with long-time supporters and made lots of new connections while breaking bread and sharing stories.
San Luis Obispo — A Thoughtful Conclusion
Dr. Itengre concluded his U.S. visit in San Luis Obispo, where Dr. Christopher Payne, former WFF Board Chair, hosted a gathering at the Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo. The event brought together donors and advocates for an evening of insight and renewed commitment to maternal health for all. It was a fitting close to a journey marked by connection, collaboration, and hope.
Dr. Itengre’s U.S. visit bridged continents and communities, connecting everyone along his journey around a shared mission. His presence inspired renewed commitment to restoring dignity, ensuring access, and advocating for the healing of women facing childbirth injuries.
Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making his trip a success — our donors, Board Members, and others behind-the-scenes at each location ensuring his travel went without any hiccups. We are grateful for his leadership, and for the communities across the U.S. who welcomed him with open arms.
