After treatment, fistula survivors need help reintegrating back into their communities. Women are educated in their rights as women, credit and savings activities, how to form solidarity groups, protecting their health and childbirth injury prevention. Solidarity groups back in their communities provide opportunities to join together for economic empowerment. Women launch small business ventures or Income Generating Activities (IGAs) both individually and as a group.

A fistula patient loses everything after the obstetric trauma. So, the implementation of social integration services is an important part of the Holistic care at Arena. This helps the process of healing.

Dr. Itengre Ouedraogo, Founder of ARENA, WFF’s local partner in Burkina Faso; FIGO-Certified fistula surgeon

Women receive vocational training and provisions to start implementing income generating activities. These are skills they can use to help earn an income in their communities. A grant from WFF supports women trained in beadwork and soap making in the ARENA training center.

By learning these skills, once I go back to my village, I will be able to do this work in order to meet my daily needs.
